Ah, who doesn’t love the smell of hopes and dreams in the morning? Waking up, checking the internet and seeing forum after forum just bustling with new information. When a game is announced to have been dug up from the grave it is truly an amazing feeling, like not long ago when it was revealed that we would be getting a Final Fantasy 7 remake. Now we are getting the first system shock information since back in November when we were introduced to Night Dive Studios, the studio currently charged with remaking the original System Shock.
We’ve already covered the whole Final Fantasy 7 bit, so what about that System shock? Well, apart from there being a remake of the original, there is also talk and teasers of a new sequel in the works. That’s right, the franchise long thought to be dead and gone is coming back with a lot of vengeance.
So, what do we know thus far? Well, we know that the first teaser gives a countdown that has about 5 days left on it at the time of writing this. There is no definitive answer at the moment as to what this countdown will reveal. Our only suspicion is that it leads to the ‘announcement’ teaser of System Shock 3 that lets you sign up for the mailing list.
Beyond that, we also know that the studio behind System Shock 3 is currently Otherside Entertainment. So what do we know about them? Well, we know that Paul Neurath is the founder. Who is he you ask? Paul Neurath is the co-founder of the now defunct Looking Glass Studios, much more known for their development of the original System Shock and its sequel: System Shock 2.
That all sounds great, but surely there must be a catch, right? You see, at the moment Otherside Entertainment is working on another game as well, known as Underworld Ascendant. Otherside currently employs 6 people, and their current work in progress was crowdfunded to the tune of about 860,000 dollars.
This means the company is already bogged down with a game, so how are they possibly going to work on a second game, especially one held in such high regard as System Shock? How can they possibly do it with just 14 people? Crowdfunding. It seems to just be the answer to everything.
Most likely, System Shock 3 is going to be up on kickstarter, and it is most likely going to make millions. It practically has to if the company wants to hire on more developers, even if they are temporary, so that they can finish both projects without postponing either one.
Right now, the information around System Shock 3 is pretty much nothing but conspiracy. Nothing is set in stone yet, and we may honestly not ever see the game. It is only being teased, and games in the past have been cancelled before. Fans are hopeful, but hopefully none of them got their hopes to high just encase of a let down.
